Before and After Care Instructions

for Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport)

Pre Treatment - 3 Days Before Appointment

  • Avoid hair removal in the area that will receive neuromodulator injections (whether with wax, laser, cream, plucking or shaving)

  • If possible, avoid anti-inflammatory medications (for example, ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, naproxen, and Aspirin) for 24 hours before injections, unless advised by your primary care provider or other medical specialist to continue. If you are on prescription blood thinners (Plavix, warafarin) or anti-inflammatories, please notify me before your injections.

24 Hours Before Appointment

  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before treatment. Consuming alcohol will increase risk of bruising

  • Ensure the online intake form has been completed prior to your appointment.

Day of Appointment

  • It is best if you can, come to the appointment without make-up on. (I do have make-up remover wipes in the clinic if this is not possible.)

After Care

Immediately Post Treatment

  • If possible, for the first hour following treatment, animate the facial muscles treated (frowning, lifting brows, squinting, smiling). This allows the neuromodulator to be absorbed into the strongest part of the muscle. It is NOT required however, to have the procedure work.

  • Small raised areas, swelling and some redness may be seen immediately after the treatment and usually resolve within 15-30 min.

  • Avoid wearing makeup for 2 hours following treatment.

24 Hours Following Treatment

  • Do NOT rub or massage the treated area for at least 24 hours following treatment. Gently washing your face is fine as long as you are not putting pressure on the injected areas, which could move the neuromodulators into other muscles.

  • Do NOT use electronic facial brushes for 24 hours after injections.

  • Do NOT lie down for 4 hours after your injection. This includes face down or on your back. This has the potential for the neuromodulator to spread into the orbit of your eye and cause eyelid drooping. Sitting in a semi-reclined position is ok.

  • Do NOT get a facial, chemical peel, laser, or microdermabrasion for at least 14 days after Neuromodulator injections.

  • Do NOT put your face in a massage cradle or be face down in a chiropractor’s chair for 24 hours, as this pressure can move the neuromodulator into undesired locations of your face.

  • Do NOT perform strenuous activities which elevate your heart rate, including heavy lifting or vigorous exercise, for 24 hours after treatment. Low impact exercise, such as walking, is fine.

  • Stay out of the sun until any redness or swelling has gone down.

  • Do NOT wear a headband or hat where the band goes across your forehead if you have had injections between the brows or in the forehead.

2 weeks following treatment

  • Although you will start to notice the effects of treatment in 3-5 days, it is common to take around 2 weeks to see full effect, so wait until this time has passed before assessing whether or not you’re happy with the results!

  • If this is your first time having neuromodulator treatment, I will schedule you for a 2 week follow up to inject any areas that need “touching up.”
